while i was reading Gen 12:2 the other day, i also read a note i wrote previously while doing a different study... so, this is not an original thought, or something the Lord just showed me as i was reading, but He seems to keep bringing it back to me, so i thought i should share it as food for anyone else to think about... or "chew on". :) God was telling Abram that He is going to make him a great nation, and that He will bless him. the word for "bless" here is BARAKH, which means "to bend the knee, to kneel down". the note goes on, "Students of that period identify a close association between kneeling and receiving a blessing. The blessing God would give to Abram and all of his spiritual descendants would be one they would receive on their knees!" wow! do you often get on your knees to pray? it isn't easy for me to admit that i am rarely on my knees... it hurts! i am much more comfortable sitting in a chair. i want God's blessings, all that He wants to give me. what this says to me is that when i pray, i need and want to be ON MY KNEES. maybe not every time i pray... being on my knees would remind me of the importance of humbling myself before the Lord... and i might be more concise in my prayers as well [sometimes i go on and on and on and on...]. i am excited about the blessings God will bestow when i bend my knees to draw closer to Him.
(Groan) Last day of vacation! Is everyone as busy as I am???
Genesis 16:2 Oh, Sarai, Sarai….baaaad idea! But I get it; there have been times God has revealed to me something He has planned for my life, and I think, great, I’ll just help it along by doing thus and such. God doesn’t need my help! And if what He has for me isn’t happening in His time, I probably don’t want it now. I was reading from “A Pillar By Day”, an awesome devotional by Jon Courson, and he brought up the point that God does not withhold good things from His children. That was a huge light bulb for me! “God….I want….I think it could be great…..don’t You see how awesome it would be? Oh please please please make……happen….if it’s Your will of course.” (That last part thrown in for posterity). And God says, “No, Chris.” And I whine, “But whhhyyyyyy? That’s not fair!” Well, if God is withholding something from us, it’s because it would not be a good thing for us, no matter what we think. Maybe not forever, but the thing God is withholding from me right now, He has a reason for, and to continue to want it is not being within His will. Luckily, He is gracious and patient enough to allow me to pray, “God, I want this. And if it’s wrong for me to want it, because it’s not Your will, help me to not desire it anymore. Give me patience and restraint to not go there even if the opportunity arises.” Abraham had 13 years pass between the birth of Ishmael and the birth of Isaac……13 years to wonder when God’s promise was going to be fulfilled, and to be patient….I bet his faith was soo strengthened the day Sarah came to him and said, “Abraham….guess what?!” I always said if I had a son, I would name him Isaac, because it means laughter.
16:15 I seem to recall hearing that Ishmael was the father of Islam. True or false?
17:8 Doesn’t this settle the debate over who should rightfully inhabit Israel? I wish everyone would just hop on board here. God says the Jews can have it; that’s good enough for me.
Matthew 5:27-48: As women, we need to be mindful that we may cause our brothers in Christ, to lust, even unintentionally. Therefore I am creating the Potato Sack wardrobe, available soon at Dillards, Macy’s and wherever fine Christian clothing is sold. Seriously, though, it’s not just what we wear, it’s how we act, what we say…..I’m forever telling my daughter to put on a longer shirt. We need a hardcore attitude toward sin coupled with the power of the Holy Spirit. In our own strength we will fail. Don’t lust, get rid of anything that causes you to sin, stay married. Revisiting the whole promise thing, let your word be enough; let your yes be yes, your no be no. I want people to know that if Chris says she will do something, she’ll do it. If she says she’ll be someplace, she‘ll show up. If she says she loves you, she’s not gonna just stop one day. Hey! This loving your enemies thing…..pray for me on this one…..I have a really nasty neighbor…..I have family members I’d like to prune off the tree….I have an intolerant, impatient side that I am not so happy with, and I have a God who loves me anyway and is so much bigger than any puny weapon I can come against my enemies with. That’s so cool. Happy Sunday, everyone!
v. 2 Here Sarah tries to "help" God out and makes things happen in her flesh by having her nurse maid bear a son w/Abram. Nothing supernatural about that, in fact, it's very logical and not all that difficult. It is also very carnal and NOT supernatural! The consequence, she ends up despising the very thing she instigated not to mention the birth of the battle between the Jews and the Arabs (Islam). Yes, Chris, it is true, hence the hatred between the two. So when I am tempted to take matters into my own hands and help God out in things like Sarah did, I need to remind myself of the terrible long standing consequence that my intervention may bring about. God doesn't need my help and if I can make it happen it is not supernatural and God doesn't get the glory! Ouch, that stings.
Chapter 17
v.23 Notice Abraham's obedience. It says he had them all circumcised the very same day as God had said to him. I don't know about you, but at times I ponder the unpleasant instructions from the Lord for awhile before doing them. I need to obey all the way, right away and with a joyful heart trusting that God know best for me.
Matt. 5:46
This is a challenging verse in that it is easy to love the lovable and hang w/ those who make you comfortable, but Jesus raises the bar, or kicks it up a notch and says to love our enemies. The good news is that God never calls us to do something He Himself has already done and He never calls us without equipping us to do it with the help and power of the Holy Spirit. So if you are like me, and you think there is no way I can do it, you're right. It is only through the power of the Holy Spirit will I be able to do it, hence He gets the glory and not me. After all, it is not about me, but it is all about HIM!
