OK, I’m pressing on, even though it is getting a bit lonely here….I hope my run-on sentences aren’t driving folks away.
Matthew 10:5-6 Jesus tells His apostles to go to the Jews, but not the Gentiles. That will come later. How merciful that God chose to include those of us who are not Jewish in His plan!
10:8 Had an interesting mini discussion in class last week that the leprosy spoken of in Bible times was actually eczema. I’m not saying it’s true or not, and as we were in the middle of a lecture I couldn’t stand up and tell her the Bible was the inerrant Word of God and debate the point, but who knows? Nice that the Bible was even mentioned; I hear you can be fired for that.
10:9-10 The apostles were told to go with NOTHING. So much has been revealed to us about faith so far! We’ve seen folks just go immediately, without question, and without STUFF, even stuff that would have been regarded as essential back then. (Could you see us today, loaded down with designer matching luggage and the Lord just shaking His head?) I could go on forever about the stuff life, but we probably already know we have everything we possibly need. I have gotten so content (OK, I’m in school, so I’m also broke) with what I have materially that when Christmas came and people asked me what I wanted, I truly could think of very little. I’m not saying that to toot my horn; I’m just saying that when life becomes pigeonholed, and it’s (in my case) God, school, and very little else, you truly see what you can live without, and actually enjoy life more. Oh, and for Christmas I ended up with a Walther p-22 with a laser sight, which I probably wouldn’t have brought with me if I was a disciple. It’s pretty sweet.
10:14 This verse was a relief for me; we don’t have to be obnoxiously persistent in our preaching….if the Word is not received, shake the dust off and go…what’s important is that seeds were planted.
10:19 I can attest to this firsthand as I had to speak in court last July (No, I wasn’t in trouble; someone else was). It was a humbling opportunity, as we were the ones who had been wronged, and it was so tempting to just draft a scathing, albeit truthful speech, but after a lot of prayer, and a huge work of the Holy Spirit, because I had no love for this person, I was able to stand up in court, quote Scripture, tell the judge what the Bible said about loving your neighbor, and your enemy, and very long story short, we got a favorable outcome. Pray for us when this person gets off probation. Praise God that the Holy Spirit intercedes and speaks for us, because I so often put my foot in my mouth. I think I mentioned I am doing an awesome study on the Spirit, and it is only through His power that I’m writing every day; He is the one who propels me out of bed and into the Word at an absurd hour with JOY. I could go on all day about this; anyway, there are 3 experiences with the Holy Spirit: 1) para in the Greek, the Spirit is with us, 2) en, the Spirit is in us when we are saved, and 3) epi, the Spirit comes upon us. It’s of this such experience that the Bible is speaking of when we have words or remember Scripture off the cuff when we (I) would otherwise be staring blankly with my mouth hanging open. Trying to live a Christian life without the power of the Holy Spirit is hard, if not impossible to sustain, guys. But with Him…..oh, my goodness….taste and see for yourselves if you’re not already….your life will never be the same.
I gotta save the OT part for later, if I even get there, because the folks are coming into town today, I have school, and life is BUSY, can I get an amen?? Lovin’ y’all!
Although I really would like to hear what the rest of you think about this stuff, I'm enjoying this blog because it keeps me accountable in a sense. I kind of thought, for a day or two, um, Chris, the other folks aren't doing this....you should probably let it go too.....and I almost did, but I put some of my musings on my neglected myspace page, and lo and behold, an athiest gal I know phoned me that afternoon and said she'd been reading them and enjoying them, and is thinking of following us in our Bible reading. How cool is that?! So, uncertainty aside, I'll keep on...
Genesis 33:2 You know, I always kind of pictured Leah as something of a hag, isn't that sad? She had to be one incredible woman to endure living in her sister's shadow...and in the end Jacob doesn't end up buried with Rachel.
33:4 Awesome! Family forgiveness. I know firsthand that time and the Holy Spirit can bring healing even when a family member has hurt you terribly. In my case, things went well for awhile and then said family member freaked and dropped out of sight again, but the point is, forgiveness = healing.
34:2-7 My biggest problem with "The Red Tent", a book I mentioned in previous posts, is that it claimed Dinah willingly married Shechem. I mean, it made for a good storyline but doesn't follow what the Bible says. V 13-17, well, I thought that was a little cold, but then I'd been swayed by what I'd read, which is why we need to be so careful and why I wouldn't want to be the DiVinci Code guy on Judgement Day. I'm thinking, "But Shechem LOVES her!" Well. whether that was true or not, it wasn't what God wanted for Israel....maybe they were in love, and would have been blissfully happy....and everything else would have fallen apart. Folks would have intermarried, Israel would have been defiled..it might have been a mess, a huge price to pay for two people's happiness. I have no idea how I got going on this point. Sorry. So in V 26 they took Dinah, in my imagination wailing for her beloved, but again, the Bible says nothing of the sort, and in V 30 we see that even Jacob was a little cheezed off. He appears to me to be a man who disliked conflict. I can relate.
35:4 Did this include the gods that Rachel stole??? Did she finally give 'em up, do ya think?
35:10 brings us another name change.
I'm glad Jacob was still setting up stones, and making monuments. I came across a quote the other day by Longfellow: "The holiest of all holidays are those/Kept by ourselves in silence and apart;/ The secret anniversaries of the heart."
Make note of those special times, places, people, encounters with God. Don't forget.
