The Law. Wow, there's a lot there. Tons of rules and regulations; it's enough to make your head spin.
Yet, it was a good thing. We're no longer under the law, and praise God for that! Still, there is a lot I have read in the past few days that, though I am no longer obligated to do, still makes sense.
Obviously, we don't go around stoning people anymore. Sometimes I wish we did...PD did a great sermon on this subject (the death penalty in OT Israel) and it sure kept crime in check. We also don't avenge a relative's death, and (we ladies) don't end up married to the first cad who siezes us.
But I like what God says about tithing, about the sabbath, about letting the land rest, about the festivals comemmorating His goodness. I like how the law demands common decency that is missing today: returning something of someone's if you should find it, playing nice, playing fair, not taking advantage of folks.
God says repeatedly: You shall put away the evil from Israel. He desires His people to be intolerant of sin, to take a hard-line attitude, to not put up with it. Our society is not like that anymore; look at who the current news topic is: There's certainly no stoning going on; it's sensationalized; the gal is famous! The fact that I (I live in a bubble these days; my dad used to not fathom how I could be so ignorant of what's going on in the world around me; now he knows) know who these people are is proof of that!
We can't change society, but we can start at home by raising our kids in a Godly manner, by requiring more than the status quo. That's my prayer tonight. :-)
